The UN announced that a treaty banning the production and use of land mines would go into effect in March 2000. Burkina Faso was the fortieth nation to ratify the treaty, fulfilling an established provision that the UN would begin enforcing the stipulations of the treaty six months after 40 countries had signed it.  1
 
2000, July
 
Burkina Faso qualified for $700 million in debt relief under the Heavily Indebted Poor Countries Initiative of the IMF and the World Bank.  2
