| Shortly after his return to the Gold Coast from Britain in 1947, Nkrumah began a campaign to organize the African masses in support of self-government. In 1948, African ex-servicemen loyal to Nkrumah staged a mass demonstration in Accra to protest against poor living conditions. The rioting that followed led to the deaths of 29 people. Following the unrest, an official inquiry recommended a rapid advance toward self-government in the Gold Coast. A boycott of European imports in the Gold Coast occurred during January and February. | 4 |
