The Fijian parliament unanimously adopted a new multiracial constitution based mainly on the report of the three-member Constitution Review Commission appointed by Pres. Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara in March 1995.  1

By a 72 percent majority, voters in New Caledonia approved a plan for 15 to 20 years of shared sovereignty with France. This was one in a series of measures to increase New Caledonian autonomy.  2
