1976, July

In continuation of the civilian government's attempt to distance itself from its alliance with the Americans (begun in Oct. 1973), Thailand ordered an American military pullout, completed by July. The Thai also forced Malaysia to withdraw a police field force from southern Thailand, which had been allowed under a 1964 Malaysian-Thai agreement. As a result of these various actions, Thailand was able to establish full diplomatic relations with Hanoi.  1

Oct

The army intervened to suppress student riots at Thammasat University. As a result, the secretary-general of the National Reform Advisory Council, Gen. Kriangsak Chomanand, installed a new regime under Prime Minister Thanin Krivichien, to replace the inept Seni Pramoj government. He toured the member countries of ASEAN, calling for closer regional cooperation against communism.  2
