A new constitution provided limited parliamentary government. An appointed senate (composed largely of military and police officers) was to wield power until election of a house of representatives.  1

The first general election in ten years. The ruling United Thai People's Party secured 75 of the 219 seats in the lower house, and the related Independents another 72, but the opposition Democratic Party garnered all the seats in Bangkok and other cities.  2

Marshal Thanom was reappointed premier.  3
 
July 28
 
Visit of Pres. Richard Nixon. There were now 48,000 U.S. troops in Thailand. The president repeated assurances of U.S. support in the event of an attack on Thailand.  4
