Communist guerrillas, supported by Beijing, seized the northern town of Kyokuk. Government troops at first won a victory over them at Lushio, but this was followed by severe fighting and heavy casualties (July 21).  1
 
Aug. 15
 
Further battles between Nankham and Kutbar. The government felt obliged to set up an independent Strategic Command Headquarters at Lushio to coordinate large-scale operations.  2
