Communist China and Burma signed a protocol, as an annex to their boundary agreement of 1960, stating that a joint border committee had successfully defined and marked off the boundaries.  1
 
1962, March 2
 
Ne Win led an army coup that deposed U Nu's civilian government. U Nu and other leaders of the Union Party were arrested. Parliament was abolished, and the small Revolutionary Council was put in its place. The council on March 8 named Ne Win chief of state.  2
 
July 4
 
The new regime sponsored the Burmese Socialist Program Party, committed to “the Burmese Way to Socialism.” All other parties were banned.  3
