The Burgundians, arriving from the Oder-Vistula region, moved along the Main athwart the Rhine, entered Gaul under King Gundicar, and finally settled as federates of the Roman Empire in upper Burgundy (i.e., the lands including Lyons, Vienne, Besançon, Geneva, Autun, Mâcon). King Gundibald (d. 516) codified Burgundian law in the Lex Gundobada. The Burgundians were finally conquered by the sons of Clovis (c. 532), but the Burgundian state remained separate under Frankish control with Merovingian princes until 613. After 613 it was a province of the Frankish Empire. | 1 |
