Prime Minister Bandaranaike died in Colombo of wounds inflicted by an assassin. Education Minister Wijayananda Dahanayake was named to replace him.  1

In parliamentary elections, the opposition Sri Lanka Freedom Party and its allies won an overwhelming victory over the ruling United National Party. On July 21 Mrs. Sirimavo Bandaranaike was sworn in as prime minister.  2
 
1961, April
 
The Tamil Federal Party touched off an emergency situation because of its disobedience campaign for a separate Tamil-speaking state.  3
 
1963, May 1
 
Emergency rule ended after 743 days.  4
 
1964, Feb. 27
 
Chinese premier Zhou Enlai began a three-day visit to discuss the Chinese-Indian border dispute.  5
 
Oct. 30
 
An agreement with India provided for the repatriation of 525,000 Indians over the next 15 years; Ceylon was to grant citizenship to 300,000 others of Indian origin.  6
