Demonstrations against the government, particularly at Dhaka University, led Ershad to impose a new state of emergency. This failed to stop an overwhelming wave of strikes and violent demonstrations, leading Ershad to resign (he was then placed under house arrest). Chief Justice Shahabuddin Ahmed assumed the post of acting president.  1

In elections, the BNP won an overall majority, and Begum Khaleda Zia assumed office as prime minister.  2
 
May 1
 
A cyclone killed 250,000 people and caused extensive economic damage. Many criticized the government's slow response. This disaster replicated an established pattern: a climatic catastrophe reveals the country's organizational and economic disarray, fomenting protest and political instability, which augment the painful effects of the disaster.  3
