Bangladesh was recognized by Pakistan.  1

Disastrous floods intensified an already desperate situation, leading to famine. Fifty thousand people died.  2
Despite massive infusions of foreign aid, the cost-of-living index rose by 400–500 percent; starvation and death claimed thousands of people. The Awami League was seen as ineffectual and soon came under attack by leftist groups.  3

The government declared a state of emergency, and all fundamental rights guaranteed by the constitution were suspended.  4
The Jatiya Sangsad (Parliament) adopted a constitution bill that replaced the parliamentary government with a presidential form of government and provided for the introduction of a one-party system. Mujib became president, assuming absolute powers, and created the Bangladesh Krishak-Sramik (Peasants and Workers) Awami League, excluding all other parties from government.  5
