Murder of prominent journalist Farag Foda by religious extremists upset with his criticism of conservative Islamicist movements. By the early 1990s, a number of extreme religious groups such as al-Jama ‘a al-Islamiya had declared open war on the government. Among their targets were government officials, police, secularist authors, and Western tourists. They demanded the establishment of an Islamic state and the elimination of Western influences from Egyptian society.  1
Death of Muhammad Abd al-Wahhab, famous singer and composer. He led the movement to transform Egyptian music by incorporating Western orchestration, instruments, and themes.  2

In a failed assassination attempt, several gunmen believed to be associated with militant Islamic groups opened fire on a motorcade carrying Pres. Hosni Mubarak.  3

The last of two rounds of legislative elections to the People's Assembly gave the ruling National Democratic Party an overwhelming majority of the vote. This was promptly contested by opposition parties accusing the NDP of fraud.  4
