Murder of prominent journalist Farag Foda by religious extremists upset with his criticism of conservative Islamicist movements. By the early 1990s, a number of extreme religious groups such as al-Jama a al-Islamiya had declared open war on the government. Among their targets were government officials, police, secularist authors, and Western tourists.
