Arrest of over 1,500 critics of the government. Among those detained were religious extremists, intellectuals, and leftist and conservative political leaders. The government banned the publications of the Muslim Brotherhood and all Coptic organizations. On Sept. 5, Sadat deposed Coptic pope Shenuda III and outlawed the Muslim Brotherhood.  2
