The banning of all honorific titles (pasha, bey, and so on) by the revolutionary government.  1

Population boom. The number of Egyptians rose from 20 million in 1952 to 50 million by 1986. The urban population grew dramatically. Cairo's population alone increased from about 2.2 million inhabitants in 1950 to 14 million in 1986.  2

Establishment of Sawt al-Arab (Voice of the Arabs), the radio station that became one of the regime's most effective propaganda tools, particularly for the cause of pan-Arabism.  3
 
Feb
 
Organization of the Liberation Rally, created as the political party of the new government. Its function was to generate grassroots support for the policies and reforms that the regime sought to implement. It was superseded in 1956 by the National Union, which soon became preoccupied with selecting candidates for the new Parliament.  4

Anglo-Egyptian settlement on the question of Sudan. It was announced that Sudan would achieve its independence in 1956, at which time Sudanese voters would choose either union with Egypt or separate status (they eventually opted for the latter).  5
 
June
 
Appointment of Abd al-Hakim Amir as commander in chief of the armed forces. A close ally of Nasser, he soon became the second most powerful person in the country. He kept the army loyal to Nasser, who looked to it as the mainstay of his regime. In return, the grateful president raised military expenditures until by 1965 they were consuming 12 percent of the GNP (in comparison to 4 percent in 1950).  6
