Israel and the Palestinians reached an accord on the Israeli pullout from Hebron with the help of King Hussein of Jordan.  1
 
Feb. 26
 
The Israeli cabinet approved the development of a Jewish neighborhood in East Jerusalem, despite Palestinian and international protest. Israeli-Palestinian talks reached an impasse over the issue (April 3). Netanyahu refused to compromise. King Hussein of Jordan asked the U.S. to intervene. On May 6 Israeli president Weizman met with Arafat in an attempt to put an end to the impasse.  2

Thirteen Israelis were killed in suicide bombings by Hamas in West Jerusalem. Netanyahu declared his refusal to comply with American and Jordanian appeals to ease sanctions on Palestinians.  3

Israeli war planes launched attacks against sites in Lebanon.  4
 
Sept. 4
 
Three suicide bombers killed four Jewish civilians in West Jerusalem. Hamas claimed responsibility. The Palestinian National Authority decried the attack.  5

Israel attempted to assassinate a Hamas leader in Jordan, sparking international outrage. To appease Jordan, Israel released 20 Palestinian and Jordanian prisoners.  6
