The Syrian army entered Lebanon. The pretext of the occupation was to bolster the position of Christian forces and prevent a takeover by Palestinian radicals. Excepting the interlude of the Israeli invasion (1982–83) (See 1982, June 6), Syria established itself as the dominant outside power in Lebanon into the 1990s.  2
