Signing of the CAMP DAVID ACCORDS between Israel and Egypt, mediated by U.S. president Jimmy Carter. The main points of the treaty concerned a gradual Israeli withdrawal from the Sinai Peninsula and the establishment of normal Egyptian-Israeli relations. Further provisions dealt with the status of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip but were never implemented because the PLO and Jordan, who were expected to take part, rejected them out of hand. The peace treaty between Egypt and Israel was formally signed on March 26, 1979.  1
