In Ottawa, Canada held its first parliamentary session since the Liberal Party of Prime Minister Jean Chrétien took power over a year earlier. The government made job creation and economic growth its top priorities.  1

Nearly 400 construction workers forced the Nova Scotia legislative assembly to close its session. The workers protested pending legislation that would have allowed the hiring of nonunion workers on construction sites.  2
