United States and British aircraft conducted an extensive bombing attack on Iraq because of Saddam Hussein's refusal to comply with UN inspections teams throughout the previous year. In an effort to deplete a possible Iraqi arms buildup, the U.S. and Britain conducted frequent attacks on military targets in Iraq during 1999 and 2000.  2

The Republican-led House of Representatives voted to impeach Pres. Bill Clinton for the Monica Lewinsky sex and perjury scandal. The vote to impeach was made largely along party lines, following an eight-month investigation by independent counsel Kenneth Starr. It was alleged in the impeachment proceedings that in trying to cover up a recent sexual relationship with Lewinsky, Clinton lied under oath and obstructed justice in a court of law. Pres. Clinton became the second president in U.S. history to be impeached.  3
