Furor erupted in academic circles over the revelation that the Central Intelligence Agency had secretly financed the National Student Association in certain of its activities.  2

A consular agreement with the Soviet Union was concluded.  3

Huge marches in New York City and San Francisco protested the war in Vietnam and demanded peace.  4
 
Summer
 
Hippies, alienated youth, captured the nation's attention and helped to shape contemporary culture by professing to have dropped out of mainstream culture to practice peace and love.  5
In the worst summer of urban violence to date, African-American discontent with life in the cities reached a boiling point. In July and August, violence broke out in 22 cities.  6

Inauguration of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, a nonprofit public corporation that allocated funds to noncommercial radio and television stations to assist them in creating high-quality programs.  11
 
Dec. 1–8
