The Social Democratic Labor Party led by Inguar Carlsson won the Swedish elections. On Nov. 13 Sweden voted to join the EU.  1
 
1998, Sept. 20
 
The Social Democrats won a slight majority in the Swedish Parliament, known as the Riksdag. The Social Democratic Party continued its control of the government only through a coalition with several smaller left-wing parties. Goran Persson was reinstalled as prime minister.  2
 
1999, Dec. 17
 
After almost 500 years as the established religion of Sweden, the Lutheran Church was stripped of its official connection to the Swedish government.  3
 
2000, July
 
Malmö, Sweden, and Copenhagen, Denmark, were connected by a bridge and tunnel that crossed the ten miles of water separating the two nations. The $2.6 billion bridge was expected to significantly enhance Sweden's economic future.  4
