The elections brought substantial losses to the dominant Social Democratic Party, while the Communist Party and the Center Party registered gains. Premier Palme, though his party was now in a minority, continued in office, with approval of the Communists. Palme was faced with widespread discontent, despite the prosperity of the country, because of drastic legislation affecting the status and incomes of the educated and upper classes.  1
 
1971, Jan. 1
 
Reform of administrative units: 132 cities and towns, including Stockholm as well as 716 municipalities and rural districts, were reorganized into 464 Kommuner, or local districts. These local districts were later reduced to 272.  2

Death of King Gustav VI. His grandson Carl Gustaf was installed as King Charles XVI on Sept. 19.  3
 
Sept. 16
 
The Socialist and non-Socialist groups were tied in the election, each winning 175 seats in the 350-member unicameral Riksdag.  4
