Labor Party in power. Trygve M. Brattelli formed a minority government to replace Lars Korvald's on Oct. 16, 1973. His new government canceled gasoline rationing, restricted the activities of foreign oil companies, set up a national oil company, and imposed price freezes to reduce inflation.  2

The discoveries of North Sea oil and gas fields began to stimulate the economy.  3

The government banned most categories of foreign immigration for a year, and then extended the ban without setting a time limit.  4
 
Oct. 2
 
King Olav announced that Norway would extend its fishing limits by creating a 200-mile “economic zone.” In June 1981 the government declared a 200-mile zone around Jan Mayen Island.  5
