A national referendum rejected a new constitutional amendment that was intended to ban all abortions except when the mother's life was in danger, and all forms of birth control that destroyed the embryo after conception.  1

Marital law: A national referendum approved the reform of the 1907 marital law, effective Jan. 1, 1988, which described husband and wife as “equal partners,” gave a spouse not in paid employment the right to an income from his or her partner, and, in cases of divorce, established the wife's right to half of the family wealth.  2
