The ruling Socialist government sustained increasing levels of criticism as several ministers were forced to resign due to their involvement in a series of scandals and corruption cases.	1

Opening of the Universal Exposition in Seville to commemorate the five hundredth aniversary of the “discovery” of America.	2

July 25

Opening ceremonies were held for the Olympic Games in Barcelona. After investing billions in preparation for the event, the city and the country plunged into an economic recession in the aftermath of the games. The draft budget proposed for the following fiscal year, introduced in the Cortes in the fall of 1993, was the most restrictive in two decades.	3
