Opening of the Universal Exposition in Seville to commemorate the five hundredth aniversary of the “discovery” of America.  2
 
July 25
 
Opening ceremonies were held for the Olympic Games in Barcelona. After investing billions in preparation for the event, the city and the country plunged into an economic recession in the aftermath of the games. The draft budget proposed for the following fiscal year, introduced in the Cortes in the fall of 1993, was the most restrictive in two decades.  3
