A Basque statute of autonomy, providing for fiscal independence from the central state, the right to form a separate police force, and guarantees for the use of Basque as the official language, was approved by the Cortes.  1

A Catalan statute of autonomy, providing for the reinstitution of the Generalitat government, regional control over education, and the normalization of the Catalan language, was approved by the Cortes (provisional restoration of the Generalitat and pre-autonomous status had been granted in 1977). The 1979 Catalan statute of autonomy further provided for the establishment of a new regional television channel (TV3), which ultimately had a profound impact on the renaissance of the Catalan language.  2
