Called by Catholic action groups, more than one million people demonstrated in Paris on June 24 against the reform of private schools (écoles libres).  2

President Mitterrand announced the repeal of the Savary law, which legalized the integration of private schooling into the state system. Mitterrand's action led to the resignations of Education Minister Alain Savary and Prime Minister Pierre Mauroy.  3
