After the Evian Agreement providing for peace between France and the Algerian rebels (March 18), de Gaulle instructed the French army to wage all-out war against the Organisation de l'armée secrète (OAS) resistance.  1
 
April 8
 
In a national referendum on the Algerian settlement of March 18, 90 percent of the valid ballots approved.  2
 
April 14
 
On the resignation of Michel Debré, de Gaulle named Georges Pompidou as the next prime minister.  3
 
May 20
 
French authorities organized an airlift to evacuate Europeans from Algiers.  4
 
May 23
 
As OAS terrorism continued in Algeria, OAS leader Raoul Salan was sentenced by a military tribunal in Paris to life in prison.  5
 
Oct. 5
 
Parliament censured the proposal, announced on Sept. 20, to elect the president by popular vote, but a national referendum (Oct. 28) approved it. Pompidou's cabinet resigned, but he was reappointed premier (Nov. 25).  6
