The Netherlands participated in the implementation of the euro, a single European currency. Ten other nations introduced the euro: Spain, Portugal, Luxembourg, Italy, Ireland, Germany, Austria, Belgium, Finland, and France.  2

A proposal to introduce the limited use of popular referenda for policy-making in the Netherlands induced Premier Wim Kok's entire cabinet to resign. This drastic move came after conflict flared along party lines in the government coalition, dividing the cabinet into two parts. This ended Wim Kok's government.  3
