The IRA declared a cease-fire in Northern Ireland in hopes of advancing a more democratic peace process. On Sept. 6 Irish prime minister Albert Reynolds met with IRA leader Gerry Adams regarding the establishment of a permanent truce. On Nov. 17 Reynolds resigned because of a split within his party that posed a threat to the peace process. Conservative John Bruton was elected on Dec. 15. Bruton stated that peace in Northern Ireland was his major priority. | 1 |
