The cabinet headed by Prime Minister Costello resigned. An election (May 30) gave a majority to the Fianna Fáil Party, and a new cabinet with Eamon de Valera as prime minister came to office on June 13.  2

After de Valera's defeat in national elections, Costello formed a coalition government.  3

Ireland admitted to the United Nations.  4

Eamon de Valera was elected president of Ireland, resigning the post of prime minister he had earlier regained.  5
