| World oil prices reached the high level of $35 per barrel, which prompted massive strikes on fuel providers across Europe and throughout Britain. Nearly 3,000 service stations were closed in the chaotic gridlock created by vociferous British protestations. Surprised by the situation, Prime Minister Blair significantly damaged his popular support by refusing to lower fuel taxes. However, emergency measures were taken to ensure that those whose lives would be at risk without the fuel, such as elderly homeowners or the hospitalized, would be supplied with sufficient gas. | 2 |
