The Falkland Islands/Malvinas War. Although Britain and Argentina reached agreement on opening the Falkland Islands to sea and air links on July 1, 1971, Argentine forces invaded the islands on April 2 (See April). Because the British had claimed the Falklands as a colony for 150 years, they responded by sending troops there on May 21, securing a surrender from Argentine forces by June 4. | 2 |
