1972, Jan.–March

On Jan. 30, 13 unarmed civilians were shot in Belfast as British troops clashed with Catholic demonstrators. Retaliation against British forces followed. In Dublin, the British embassy was razed with fire bombs. In Parliament, Home Secretary Reginald Maudlin was struck by parliament member Devlin of Northern Ireland.  1

March 30

Britain ended 51 years of semi-autonomous rule by the Ulster government of Northern Ireland and appointed William Whitelaw to the new post of Secretary of State for Northern Ireland. Catholic moderates welcomed this move and Protestant extremists opposed it.  2
