The Great Depression made itself acutely felt in Australia, where the government tried to combat it by drastic economy and other obvious devices. The rising price of gold and (after 1933) of wool, however, enabled Australia to recover more readily than many other countries.  1

Foundation of the United Australia Party, composed of a number of dissident Labourites together with remnants of the Nationalist Party. The leader of the group was Joseph A. Lyons.  2

The Labour Party was badly defeated in the elections, and a new Lyons cabinet was formed.  3
