Adoption of a higher tariff, chiefly to protect the industries that had been born of the war. All parties were more or less united on the tariff issue.  1

By the Empire Settlement Act, the British government undertook to assist in the promotion of emigration to Australia and in the settlement of emigrants on the land.  2

The elections resulted in 27 seats for the Nationalist Party, 29 for Labour, and 14 for the Country Party (founded 1919), led by Earle Page and representing farmers. The Country Party held the balance of power and was hostile to Hughes.  3
