1926

The Cai Dai sect, an amalgam of various East Asian religious traditions, was founded as a new religion by Lê Van Trung. He soon attracted tens of thousands of followers from the urban lower middle classes and the farming populace in the south.  1

1927

Nguyên Thai Hoc (1902–30) founded the Viêt Nam Quoc Dan Dang (Vietnamese Nationalist Party) on the model of the Chinese Guomindang, with the intent of fighting for Vietnamese independence. It grew rapidly in the north among urban, educated classes, small businessmen, lower-level officials, and soldiers. Hoc was executed by guillotine (June 17, 1930) with other party leaders for participating in an armed uprising at Yen Bai (Feb. 9).  2

1930, Feb. 3

At a meeting in Hong Kong called by Hô Chi Minh of all factions of Indochinese Communists, the Vietnamese Communist Party was founded. The Comintern insisted (Oct.) that the name be changed to the less nationalistic sounding Indochina Communist Party. As the Great Depression hit Vietnam, social and economic problems were exacerbated. Rural uprisings occurred in the middle of the year in Nghe An and Ha Tinh provinces.  3

Sept.–1931

The Communist Party established the Nghe-Tinh Soviet (some argue that it joined the movement later) at this provincial border region in north-central Vietnam. It frequently attacked outposts of the French colonial authorities and was eventually crushed by the French in 1931. However, it represented the first large-scale struggle led by the Communists. It also made it clear that Vietnam's revolutionary potential was in the countryside, not among its tiny urban proletariat. Hô Chi Minh was imprisoned in Hong Kong (1931–33).  4
