The independence of Manzhouguo (Manchukuo) was proclaimed by the puppet regime set up there by the Japanese military.  2
 
May 15
 
Inukai Tsuyoshi was assassinated in a military coup that was quickly crushed. A cabinet primarily of nonparty members was formed under Sait Makoto (1856–1936), with Araki Sadao as war minister and Takahashi Korekiyo as finance minister.
