The Communists embarked on a series of assaults on strategic Japanese points in north China; these were known as the Hundred Regiments Offensive, led by Gen. Peng Dehuai (1898–1974). The Japanese took heavy casualties but beat back the Communists, often committing acts of immense destructiveness against the local communities.  1

A puppet Chinese government headed by Wang Jingwei (1885–1944) was established at Nanjing with Japanese support.  2

Jiang Jieshi demanded that all Eighth Route Army forces (CCP) be north of the Yangzi River by the end of the year; and all New Fourth Army forces (CCP) retreat north of the Yangzi River by the end of Jan. 1941. The latter opposed Jiang's ultimatum.  3
