President Truman informed the French ambassador that the U.S. would relinquish part of the American zone of occupation in Germany to the French.  3

The U.S. military dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan, on orders of President Truman. On Aug. 9, a second bomb dropped, on Nagasaki, Japan (See Aug. 9). The Japanese accepted terms on Aug. 14.  4

Large-scale strikes in several leading industries, after seriously curtailing production, led to a first round of wage increases.  5
