Federal authorities deported thousands of Mexicans as illegal aliens. At the same time, Puerto Ricans gradually moved to the U.S., particularly New York, adding greater complexity to the Hispanic-American population.  2

Blacks and their white allies campaigned for an antilynching bill, which failed passage during the entire period.  3

Scottsboro case. When nine young blacks faced a summary trial and were sentenced to hang for allegedly raping two white women near Scottsboro, Alabama, the Communist Party launched an international campaign that blocked the execution of the young men.  4
