Scopes trial. The civil liberties lawyer Clarence Darrow defended John T. Scopes, a young high school teacher who faced charges of violating Tennessee's law that banned the teaching of evolutionary theories in public schools. William Jennings Bryan, the recurring presidential candidate for the Populist Party before its demise, served as counsel for the prosecution and won the case; nonetheless, antievolutionist forces compiled few additional gains, including their efforts to gain more state legislation barring evolutionary doctrines in the schools. | 1 |
