Cleopatra VII sought to restore the Ptolemaic Empire by winning to her support Caesar and later Antony (41). Because of her association with Antony, Octavian declared war on Egypt (32). After their defeat at Actium (31), and Antony's suicide at Alexandria, Cleopatra took her life rather than adorn Octavian's triumph (30). This brought to an end the last of the Hellenistic monarchies. (See 44)  1
