ALEXANDER I. He was a hard-working, intelligent ruler whose aim was to consolidate the kingdom despite opposition from Croats and other groups.  1

The government quickly dealt with a financial crisis and inflation by stabilizing the dinar. Despite political instability, Yugoslavia experienced economic progress in the 1920s: in 1924 exports exceeded imports for the first time, and by 1926 Yugoslavia had paid all of its war debt.  2

Centralization was strengthened by a law detailing the administration of the new nation along French lines. Historic provinces were eliminated, as the nation was broken into districts administered by crown-appointed prefects.  3
