Oct. 5

The Soviet Union invited Finland to enter political discussions. The Finns mobilized (Oct. 9) and replied to Soviet proposals to garrison certain positions in Finland by offering counterproposals (Oct. 23). The talks were broken off (Nov. 13), and the Soviet Union denounced the Soviet-Finnish nonaggression treaty, which had been renewed on April 7, 1934.  1

Nov. 30

SOVIET FORCES INVADED FINLAND (See Nov. 30–1940, March 12), and Finland appealed to the League of Nations (Dec. 3), which responded (Dec. 14) by expelling the Soviet Union from the League. The SOVIET-FINNISH WAR lasted from Nov. 30, 1939, to March 12, 1940, when Finland yielded territory and concessions to the Soviet Union.  2
