The Insurgents took Vinaroz, on the seacoast, thus severing Loyalist territory in Castile from Barcelona and Catalonia. A tremendous battle developed along the Ebro River, where the contestants were deadlocked during most of the summer. In accordance with the Anglo-Italian agreement, Mussolini withdrew some troops from Spain, but there still remained a substantial force estimated at 40,000. | 2 |
