The Insurgents took Vinaroz, on the seacoast, thus severing Loyalist territory in Castile from Barcelona and Catalonia. A tremendous battle developed along the Ebro River, where the contestants were deadlocked during most of the summer. In accordance with the Anglo-Italian agreement, Mussolini withdrew some troops from Spain, but there still remained a substantial force estimated at 40,000.  2

Beginning of the great Insurgent drive in Catalonia. Despite valiant resistance, the Loyalist forces were gradually driven back toward Barcelona.  3
