The Flandin cabinet was overthrown when it demanded quasi-dictatorial powers to save the franc. A Laval ministry followed. Like the Doumergue government, Laval too acquired the right to rule by decree until Oct. 31 (June 7). Laval's program called for severe deflation to get the French price level down to the world level. He also used his special powers to cut state expenditures drastically.  1

The Popular Front (Rassemblement populaire) was formally initiated. The official adhesion of the Radical Socialists came at the end of the year. The Popular Front produced its electoral program in January.  2
