The elections in Northern Ireland resulted in an overwhelming victory for the Unionists, thus blasting any hope of merger of the Free State and Northern Ireland.  1

CONCLUSION OF AN AGREEMENT WITH GREAT BRITAIN for three years. The Ulster (Northern Ireland) problem had to be shelved, but other outstanding questions were adjusted. All recent tariff barriers were thrown down. Great Britain turned over to the Free State (Eire or Ireland in the new constitution) the coast defenses of Cobh, Bere Haven, and Lough Swilly. This agreement, restoring close, friendly relations between Ireland and Britain, was approved by the Irish opposition.  2
