Abdication of Edward VIII, the first voluntary abdication in British history. The Baldwin ministry and the dominion governments had refused to consent to a morganatic marriage between the king and Mrs. Wallis Warfield Simpson, an American-born woman whose second divorce had not yet become final. Edward, apparently at odds with his ministers on other matters also (social policy, etc.), insisted on his right to shape his own life and abdicated rather than abandon his plan. He became Duke of Windsor and in June 1937 married Mrs. Simpson in France. | 5 |
