FIRST FOUR BATTLES OF THE ISONZO. The first two years of Italy's participation in the war were taken up with the fighting of 11 successive battles on the Isonzo, along a front of only about 60 miles. The Italians never advanced more than 10 or 12 miles. (See The Italian Front, 1916)  1
